The Curt Circuit Protected T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness - for Mazda MPV, item # 56010, will be installed inline with the connectors at the rear of the vehicle tail lights. On the drivers side and the passengers side you will need to remove the push pins, trim panels, cargo hooks and jack cover to access the tail light wiring. You are right, with a trunk mount bike rack installed, bikes or no bikes, you cannot open the rear hatch or trunk on any vehicle including your 2003 Mazda MPV. There are a few reasons why. First, the opening between the trunk/hatch and the body of the vehicle will change shape. It can get smaller which will cause the bike rack hooks to bend the metal on the trunk lid. We have not yet had a chance to video an installation of Curt wiring harness # 56010 in a 2004 Mazda MPV Van but the installation process is fairly simple, requiring only that you remove your taillight assemblies briefly to plug in the snap-together connectors and drill one small hole for the harness's ground wire ring terminal. These steps are all that are required to complete installation.

The center of the chain hanger brackets would sit about 30 inches rearward of the center of the trailer ball. When the chains are connected to the lift brackets and the brackets are lifted, the chains should be straight up and down, not at an angle.
